WHAT IS THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE?
The Electoral College is the system America uses to elect the president. Each state is allocated a number of votes comprised of senators and representatives. Electors chosen by political parties vote for the president based on how their states voted. In 48/50 states the winner of a state's popular vote takes all of that state's electoral votes. The Founding Fathers created the Electoral College to be a buffer between voters and the selection of the president, in fear that public opinion was subject to too much manipulation.
WHY IS IT BAD?
-
Votes in smaller states count more than votes in larger states
-
Smaller states have an unfair advantage
-
People are discouraged from voting because some states are always red and some states are always blue
-
"Winner takes all" of a state's electoral votes (in 48 states), no matter their margin of victory
-
Winner of popular vote can lose election (has happened 5 times)
-
Outdated, unnecessary & obsolete
HOW DO WE CHANGE IT?
To abolish the Electoral College, one of two routes can be taken. First, a constitutional amendment can be made, but 3/4 of the states must ratify it. This is a challenge because smaller states may not want to give up their power. Alternatively, each state can individually decide what to do with its electoral votes. Therefore, the Electoral College can be changed on a state-by-state basis.

TAKE THE PETITION!
The Electoral College is an outdated institution. What was once intended to be helpful to our growing country is now causing more problems than it solves. A vote in smaller states counts more than a vote in larger states, giving the smaller states more power. Furthermore, a candidate who wins the popular vote can ultimately lose the election.
With the winner-takes-all system 48/50 states have in place, the winner of a state's popular vote gets all of that state's electoral votes, no matter their margin of victory. To eradicate the Electoral College, 3/4 of the states must ratify a Constitutional amendment. States can also individually decide what to do with their electoral votes.
By signing this petition, I agree that the Electoral College needs to be abolished. Please take a stand for a smarter system.
